Michigan consists of two peninsulas, separated by the Straits of Mackinac. It is a state of over 9 million people (8th highest in the nation), but most of the population is concentrated in the lower part of the state. Forty-percent of the population lives in just three counties. The population is aging, too - between 2000 and 2015, the elderly population will grow by 25%.
In an effort to fill the nursing shortage, the state recently granted $17 million to schools for accelerated training programs. Schools are partnering with regional medical centers throughout the state to fill the estimated 100,000 deficit of health care practitioners expected through 2014. Health care employees earned an average of $34,300 in 2001. In 2003, registered nurses made an average salary of $52,626.
