Alaska became the 49th state in 1959. It is the largest state, and it has the largest amount of wilderness. The state is fragmented by difficult terrain and impassable weather, so residents rely on planes and trains to get them around. Anchorage, the largest city (it is almost the size of Delaware!) has six times as many pilots per capita as the rest of the United States.

Alaska has a unique need for nurses. Much of its population remains poor and underserved, and the need is high for experts in nutrition, counseling, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, pre-natal care, and other fields. But the state is also a very rewarding place to live; the people are friendly and supportive; the scenery is unbeatable; and the cost-of-living is relatively cheap.
