Alabama was admitted to the Union in 1819 and had already established itself as an agricultural center. After the collapse of slavery after the Civil War, Alabama continued to produce much of the nations' cotton and other crops, and it still does today; half of the state's land area is devoted to agriculture.
With a population of 4.5 million and still growing, Alabama's need for nurses is great. Several organizations provide scholarships for Alabama nursing school students, and most graduates are offered generous signing packages upon graduation. The state actively supports continuous learning and advanced certification options for its nurses.
