Charleston is a city in the counties of Berkeley and Charleston in the state of South Carolina. Up until 1800, Charleston was the fifth largest city in North America. Also known as The Holy City, Charleston brims with cultural uniqueness. In 2004, the Census Bureau estimated the population of the city proper as 104,883, a 7,8% growth over the population as of the 2000 census. The metropolitan area of Charleston and North Charleston had a population of about 580,000, the 76th largest in the country. The city of Charleston is located roughly at the mid-point of the South Carolina coastline. Charleston is the location of Fort Sumter, the reputed site of the "first shot" of the Civil War.
